SANGANER

Scientists have on many occasions declared
that there are not enough damline breeds for the large number of sireline
breeds in the country.
The purpose of developing this
new breed is therefore to develop an additional damline, namely a
damline that will be highly fertile and also most economical
a breed that will be in great demand, not only in the RSA but also
in the African States.
South Africa is a country of extremes
not only as far as the climate is concerned, but also in respect
of stock disease and topography. Forage production is also becoming
too expensive.
If the producer should be looking
for a breed with which he can farm extensively, with a minimum of
expensive input such as dip, medicine and care, the Sanganer is the
answer. The breeds from which the Sanganer developed has already proven
its worth and it should be an ideal supplement to these breeds.
Since the Sanganer is still in
the development phase, little information is currently available regarding
this breed of cattle. The following very important attributes have
already come to the fore.
- Tick resistance:
Not only do these animals have a very good resistance against
tick-borne diseases, but generally have less ticks than animals
from other breeds.
- Easy calving:
Calving problems do not occur.
- Vitality:
The calves are vigorous and the mortality rate is low.
- Good constitution:
These animals are always in very good condition. The young oxen
can be marketed off grazing from the age of ± 15 months.
- Fertility:
This breed is early maturing. Some heifers come into aestrus before
they are 12 months old. The re-fertilisation of the first-calf
cows is excellent.
- The fertilisation rate of 11 heifers
was 100%
- All of them calved before the age
of 26 months.
- All of the eleven heifers became
pregnant within a three months mating period.
- The young cows are in excellent
condition despite the fact that their calves are in excellent
condition.
There are high expectations regarding
the Sanganer at this stage those expectations are certainly being
satisfied.

SANGANER

The Sanganer Division
of Studbook is divided into two divisions, namely:-
- Basic Register, and
- Development register
1. Basic Register
Female animals of all Sanga
(indigenous) phenotype breeds and their mutual crosses (e.g. Afrikaner,
Nguni, Drakensberger, Tuli, Shona, etc.) that qualify as Basic Sanganers
(F-O generation) under the stipulations specified below, will be
suitable to be accepted for certifying by the Society as Basic Sanganer
animals.
Animals specified in 1.1 must
meet the requirements as stipulated by the Board from time to time
and a minimum herd count is also applicable.
Female animals are subjected
to obligatory inspection by a qualified inspector or other competent
person nominated by the Council of the Society, except in cases
where females mentioned in 1.1 are/were already registered by other
Breed Societies.
The certification of Basic
Herds by the Society is thereafter subject to inspection, at Intervals,
stipulated by the Board with approval by the Society. If such herds
do not meet the requirements set by the Board, or if such inspections
are not done within set period, certification of such herds will
be cancelled by the Society.
The Afrikaner Cattle Breeders
Society will inform Studbook annually of herds already certified
as Basic Herds that still qualify as such.
Animals that comply with the
minimum breed- and performance testing standards as specified by
the Board from time to time, and also satisfy all the requirements,
will be suitable for registration in the following
2.1.1 (F1)
(a) The progeny of a Herd Book Proper Afrikaner
bull and a Nguni phenotype female that is already recorded in the
basic register.

as mentioned in (a) and (b) above cannot be identified (i.e., parents
both already dead or sold), the female progeny of the crossings
referred to in (a) and (b) may be registered as F1. provided that
the animals be approved by a technical officer or other competent
person nominated by the Council.
This person must be convinced
that the animals has all the prescribed requirements of a Sanganer.

come into consideration for registration in the Studbook Proper
of the Sanganer division.
2.2 Mating Systems
Multiple sire mating is allowed in certified
Basic herds as well as in respect of the breeding of F1 and F2 animals.
2.3 Performance testing
Participation in the National Beef Performance-
and Progeny Testing Scheme of the Department is compulsory in respect
of all F1 and higher animals..
